NAIOP Rebrands as Commercial Real Estate Development Association to Reflect Industry Evolution

NAIOP has changed its name to the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, reflecting the diverse roles of its members in the commercial real estate sector.
TORONTO – NAIOP, the association representing commercial real estate developers, owners, investors, and related professionals, has officially changed its name to the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (CREDA). This rebranding effort aims to better convey the extensive range of work undertaken by its members and the comprehensive nature of commercial real estate development they encompass. Rebecca Askew, president of the Greater Toronto Chapter of CREDA, commented, "The transition to the Commercial Real Estate Development Association powerfully reflects the evolution of our industry and the direct impact of our members right here in the Greater Toronto Area."As the second-largest chapter in North America, CREDA’s local membership isn't limited to a single asset class. Askew emphasized that the members include developers, owners, operators, and investors who are actively influencing their neighborhoods, fostering economic growth in the region, and creating the vibrant spaces where the community resides, works, and interacts. She further stated that the new name effectively communicates their identity to local policymakers and stakeholders, reinforcing their chapter's leadership while adhering to their core mission of advocacy, education, research, and connection throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Founded in 1967, the association has evolved alongside the commercial real estate sector, now boasting over 21,000 members through 55 chapters across North America. Kevin Hardy, the past president of the Greater Toronto Chapter, remarked, "NAIOP has built an extraordinary legacy over nearly six decades, grounded in strong relationships, industry leadership, and member engagement. The move to CREDA builds on that foundation while better reflecting the breadth of today’s commercial real estate industry."
Hardy reassured members that although the name has changed, the mission that they have relied on for decades remains robust. This evolution, according to Hardy, ensures that they will continue to lead the broader commercial real estate industry for many years to come.
As the Greater Toronto Chapter celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the name change symbolizes a significant new chapter in its history. The decision to adopt a new name is the result of a multiyear, research-driven process that involved thorough member engagement, stakeholder interviews, focus groups, surveys, and strategic planning, as noted in the release. This thoughtful approach underscores the association's commitment to adapting and growing with the changing landscape of commercial real estate.
