Construction Begins on Affordable Housing Development in Toronto

Construction has commenced on a new rent-controlled housing project in Toronto, set to provide 74 units, including 17 affordable homes, utilizing sustainable building practices.

TORONTO – The City of Toronto, along with CreateTO and the Government of Canada, has officially launched the construction of a new rent-controlled and sustainable housing development located at 1113–1125 Dundas St. W. This initiative, situated at the intersection of Dundas Street West and Ossington Avenue, aims to deliver a total of 74 new rent-controlled housing units, of which at least 17 will be designated as affordable homes.
Designed by the architectural firms Moriyama Teshima Architects and Montgomery Sisam Architects, the project will be constructed by Pomerleau Construction. It incorporates low-carbon mass timber construction techniques and an energy-efficient design, highlighting a commitment to sustainable building practices. Notably, over 40 percent of the residential units will consist of two- or three-bedroom configurations, catering to families and larger households.
The development is set to transform what was previously a municipal parking lot into non-market, affordable rental homes aimed at supporting low- and moderate-income residents in Toronto. The initiative underscores the city’s evolving role as a public developer, as it seeks to take a more proactive and intentional approach in the use of public land for the construction of affordable housing.
According to a press release, the City of Toronto is establishing clear housing targets that address the needs of its residents, while also expediting the development review and approval processes to facilitate such projects. This housing development is part of a larger portfolio of sites being redeveloped by CreateTO, reinforcing the city’s commitment to addressing the ongoing housing crisis.
