Completion of Tsi Thonwatíhsnye Long-Term Care Home Marks New Chapter for Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory

The newly constructed Tsi Thonwatíhsnye long-term care home in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory is set to provide culturally appropriate services for local Mohawk Elders, housing 128 residents with various amenities.

TYENDINAGA MOHAWK TERRITORY — The construction of the Tsi Thonwatíhsnye long-term care home has officially reached completion, marking a significant milestone for the community. Developed by the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte First Nation, this facility is designed to provide culturally appropriate services tailored to the needs of local Mohawk Elders. According to a recent release, the home will accommodate 128 residents, with four distinct ‘resident home areas’ each capable of housing up to 32 individuals. Each area is equipped with its own dining and activity spaces, lounges, and bedrooms to foster a homely environment.
The facility boasts additional features such as therapy and recreation rooms, a dedicated area for worship, and beautifully landscaped amenities throughout its grounds, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for its residents. This project has also received a construction funding subsidy top-up from the provincial government, illustrating the support for initiatives that benefit Indigenous communities.
As the home prepares to welcome its first residents later this summer, the completion of the Tsi Thonwatíhsnye long-term care home represents not just a new building, but a new chapter in the provision of elder care within the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The focus on culturally relevant care underscores the importance of community needs in the planning and execution of such vital projects.
