Unity Health Toronto Unveils New Ambulatory Care Centre at St. Michael's Hospital

Unity Health Toronto has officially opened a new ambulatory care centre at St. Michael's Hospital, enhancing patient care in the region.

TORONTO — The new ambulatory care centre at St. Michael’s Hospital has officially opened its doors to patients, marking a significant upgrade to the facility's emergency department. The renovation of the historic Shuter Wing has transformed it into a modern space designed to accommodate over 70,000 walk-in patients annually, according to an official release. The project commenced in 2023, aiming to replace the century-old wing situated at the northeast corner of the hospital with a new structure located at the intersection of Bond and Shuter streets.
Interior and structural demolition of the old wing concluded in the spring of 2023, paving the way for construction to begin shortly thereafter. The newly established centre features a dedicated entrance for walk-in patients, a distinct waiting area, private examination rooms, a confidential discharge suite, and a centralized caregiver pod to streamline patient care.
This initiative is part of a larger effort supported by the Province of Ontario, which has invested $204 million into the St. Michael’s Hospital’s Peter Gilgan Patient Care Tower project. This comprehensive project will also include the addition of five new purpose-built operating rooms along with expanded facilities dedicated to orthopedic surgery, oncology, coronary care, and respirology.
In addition to the ambulatory care centre, Ontario is committing over $15 million to assist Unity Health Toronto in the planning, design, and implementation of a relocated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Michael’s. The new NICU, which is set to be completed by summer 2027, will involve the renovation of over 12,000 square feet of space, relocating the entire unit of bassinets to a larger area within the new patient care tower at St. Michael’s Hospital.
