The province of British Columbia has announced that applications for the future skills grant are now open for the 2026-27 period, with a focus on increasing access to affordable training for residents. Launched in 2023, this initiative has successfully supported over 16,500 learners across the province, according to a recent release. The program offers financial assistance of up to $3,500 for eligible short-term training programs at B.C.’s public post-secondary institutions.One of the recipients of the grant, Alireza Nikseresht, a student at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), shared his positive experience, stating, “The StrongerBC future skills grant gave me the opportunity to take the BCIT construction operations program and improve my knowledge of the B.C. Building Code and construction industry practices. It was a great experience and has encouraged me to continue upgrading my skills and knowledge in the future.”
The future skills grant is available to individuals aged 19 and older who reside in British Columbia. Participants can choose from a diverse array of over 250 training programs designed to align with the provincial labour market’s needs, reflecting the goals of the province’s Look West strategy.
The training programs cover several sectors, including:
- Clean energy, with options in clean-energy engineering, emissions management, and forest health management;
- Construction, offering courses in construction management, electrical trades, and mass-timber construction-related training;
- Health care, which includes training for health-care assistants, paramedics, and nursing;
- Mining, featuring programs in mineral exploration, mining technology, and environmental monitoring;
- Maritime industry, which encompasses marine supply-chain management, naval architecture, and marine technician training;
- Life sciences, providing training in biology, biotechnology, and biomedical engineering.
This grant program is part of a broader effort to ensure that British Columbians are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market, particularly in sectors that are critical to the province's economic growth and sustainability.
As the province continues to invest in education and training, the future skills grant will play a crucial role in addressing skill shortages and enhancing workforce capabilities across various industries. With the 2026-27 application period now open, more individuals will have the opportunity to pursue valuable training that can lead to meaningful employment in their chosen fields.
