The B.C. government has introduced the Look West Workforce Readiness Initiative, allocating $40 million over three years to enhance trades-training opportunities across the province, particularly for underrepresented communities.
The government of British Columbia has unveiled the Look West Workforce Readiness Initiative, a funding program aimed at bolstering trades-training opportunities throughout the province. This initiative is part of a broader investment exceeding $240 million in skilled trades training, which will be managed by SkilledTradesBC. The Workforce Readiness Initiative is designed to build upon recent advancements in training capacity, which includes the addition of 5,000 new training seats by the 2026-27 fiscal year, alongside increased funding for apprenticeship programs on a per-seat basis. With a commitment of $40 million distributed over three years, the initiative is set to support various projects that target several objectives. These include promoting trades training within British Columbia's strategic economic sectors and significant project areas, enhancing the progression, retention, and completion rates of apprenticeships, and expanding the capacity to offer high-quality, accessible training opportunities tailored for Indigenous Peoples, rural and remote communities, and other equity-deserving groups. Moreover, the initiative aims to assist apprentices in overcoming barriers to completing their training and to improve on-the-job training and apprenticeship pathways through collaborative partnerships.
Shelley Gray, CEO of SkilledTradesBC, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "The Workforce Readiness Initiative builds on the investment already underway to expand trades training across B.C. This initiative is about creating more opportunities for people to get the training they need, complete their apprenticeships, and build meaningful, rewarding careers that support themselves, their families, and their communities."
Applications for the initiative will be accepted until September 15, with eligible applicants including training providers funded by SkilledTradesBC. These can be public post-secondary institutions, union-affiliated training schools, and specialized training institutions focused on delivering Indigenous skills and employment training programs within the province.
Brynn Bourke, executive director of the BC Building Trades, highlighted the importance of trades training, noting that BC Building Trades union training schools are the largest sponsors of apprentices in British Columbia, training thousands of skilled tradespeople annually. "The recent historic investment in trades training has enabled us to add more than 1,000 new training seats, expanding opportunities for the next generation of workers. This additional funding will provide the critical wraparound supports apprentices need to succeed, from entry into the trades to achieving their Red Seal certification," she added.
