CGC Inc. has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Wheatland County, Alberta, enhancing wallboard production capacity and creating jobs while promoting sustainability.
WHEATLAND COUNTY, ALTA. – CGC Inc., a prominent manufacturer of gypsum-based materials, has officially inaugurated its new wallboard manufacturing plant in Wheatland County, Alberta. This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant investment of $210 million and aims to bolster the manufacturing capacity within Canada, particularly to meet the growing demand from customers across Western Canada. The new plant is expected to generate nearly 100 full-time jobs in the local community, as highlighted in a recent press release by the company.Situated on a sprawling 214 acres, the plant is set to produce Sheetrock® brand wallboard. This product is widely utilized in various construction sectors including residential housing, commercial projects, and infrastructure developments throughout Canada. The establishment of this facility follows a formal groundbreaking that took place earlier in 2024, marking a pivotal milestone in CGC's expansion strategy.
In addition to enhancing production capabilities, the Wheatland plant has been designed with a strong commitment to sustainability. The facility boasts a 20 percent reduction in carbon emissions and a 25 percent decrease in water usage compared to conventional manufacturing processes. Moreover, CGC has implemented a zero manufacturing waste policy, ensuring that all production waste is diverted from landfills. The plant also features onsite solar generation systems that contribute to minimizing its environmental impact.
The opening of the Wheatland facility aligns with CGC’s broader strategy to strengthen the building materials supply chain across Canada and North America. Alongside the new plant, the company is revitalizing the Little Narrows gypsum quarry located in Nova Scotia, which together with the Wheatland project, represents an investment of nearly $325 million. This dual investment underscores CGC’s dedication to enhancing local manufacturing capabilities and ensuring a reliable supply of essential building materials.
