Ontario Government Initiates Major Rehabilitation of Trans-Canada Highway Section

The Ontario government has begun significant rehabilitation efforts on a critical stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway, focusing on resurfacing and bridge replacements to enhance infrastructure and support economic activity.

ECHO BAY, ONT. — The Ontario government has commenced a substantial rehabilitation project on a vital segment of the Trans-Canada Highway. Crews have initiated the resurfacing of a 16.8-kilometre stretch of Highway 17, which extends from south of Echo Bay to Highway 548. This initiative encompasses not only the resurfacing of the highway itself but also the rehabilitation of the eastbound Bar River Bridge and the replacement of the westbound Bar River Bridge. In addition to these tasks, a separate contract has been awarded that will see the replacement of the Stobie Creek Bridge and the rehabilitation of the Walker Creek Culvert along Highway 17. Furthermore, the Richardson Creek Bridge on Highway 548 will also be replaced as part of this broader infrastructure effort. Highway 17 serves as a strategic conduit within the Trans-Canada Highway corridor, facilitating the movement of goods valued at over $18.6 billion annually. The Ontario government is actively working to twin the Trans-Canada Highway from Thunder Bay to Nipigon, enhancing its capacity and safety. The initial phase of this twinning project, which covers the section from Kenora to the Manitoba border, was completed in October 2024. Currently, the second phase of the twinning project, which will connect Highway 673 to Rush Bay Road, is in the preliminary design stage. These upgrades are expected to bolster transportation efficiency and support economic growth in the region.
