Tim Hortons Invests $400 Million in Restaurant Expansion and Renovations Across Canada

Tim Hortons is set to invest $400 million in new builds and renovations across Canada, focusing on enhancing restaurant designs and supporting local tradespeople.

Tim Hortons, the iconic Canadian coffee and doughnut chain, along with its restaurant owners, is embarking on a substantial investment initiative amounting to $400 million for the year. This ambitious plan includes the construction of 80 new restaurants, spearheaded by 60 franchise owners, alongside the renovation of 400 existing locations by 280 current owners throughout Canada. The breakdown of this financial commitment reveals that individual franchise owners are contributing a significant total of $270 million, while Tim Hortons corporate is adding an extra $130 million to the mix.
Currently, there are 1,500 Tim Hortons owners operating approximately 4,000 locations across the country. Of these, 340 owners are engaged in either new builds or renovations, utilizing their own funds for these projects. A statement from Tim Hortons' headquarters in Oakville emphasizes the local economic impact of this investment, highlighting that every dollar spent remains within the communities. The renovations and new constructions are anticipated to generate ongoing employment opportunities for various local tradespeople, including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, masons, painters, tilers, mechanical companies, roofers, and general contractors.
In terms of material sourcing, Tim Hortons has committed to using Canadian-owned businesses for the renovation and construction materials for their restaurants. Most of these items are manufactured domestically, with custom restaurant furniture handcrafted from 100% Canadian-sourced maple in Montréal. Additionally, all signage is designed, fabricated, and installed by Canadian suppliers, underscoring the brand’s dedication to local sourcing.
The primary objectives of these construction projects revolve around enhancing the restaurant experience for guests, with improvements planned for lighting, layouts, and overall design to facilitate quicker and more accurate service. The provinces poised to see the highest number of projects include Ontario, with plans for 26 new builds and 188 renovations; Alberta, which will see 17 new builds and 49 renovations; and Quebec, where there are 14 new builds and 51 renovations planned.
Axel Schwan, president of Tim Hortons, expressed pride in the company's Canadian roots and its ongoing investment in local communities. He stated, “Tim Hortons was built in Canada by Canadians, and we are proud to continue investing in Canada to give our guests beautiful, modern restaurants to enjoy.” This sentiment reflects the company's commitment to its heritage and the importance of community involvement in its expansion efforts.
Some of the new locations have already commenced operations, while others are currently undergoing renovations, with an expectation that all projects will be completed within the year. However, inquiries made to the head office regarding the selection of main contractors or suppliers and the specifics of design and construction standards have not been addressed.
In conjunction with this expansion, Tim Hortons has initiated a national hiring campaign aimed at recruiting 10,000 local team members, signaling a shift away from reliance on the temporary foreign worker program, which had been utilized during the COVID-19 pandemic to address workforce shortages. The original Tim Hortons location opened in Hamilton in 1964, and the company is now part of Miami-based Restaurant Brands International.
