The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been postponed as negotiations between Canada and the U.S. continue, with implications for trade and traffic.
The anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, has been postponed. This delay comes amidst ongoing tensions between Canada and the United States, exacerbated by the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump. On Thursday, the interim chief executive of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced that both nations have agreed to postpone the bridge's opening to allow time to address unresolved issues. Prime Minister Mark Carney had initially stated on Tuesday that the bridge would be operational by the week's end. However, his position shifted on Wednesday, indicating that while there is no significant crisis regarding the project, any further delays are to be expected.Preparations for a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday had already been in place, but Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens later confirmed that the bridge would not be open to traffic until Monday. The delay appears to be influenced by President Trump's statement from February, where he insisted on compensation from Canada before permitting the bridge to open. White House officials have reiterated that Trump's stance remains unchanged, leading to frustration among Canadian officials.
In a public statement shared on social media, Mayor Dilkens emphasized the importance of not compromising Canadian interests for the bridge's opening, urging for a favorable trade deal. He expressed hope for a resolution, stating, "Although we would all like the Gordie Howe Bridge to open, Canada need not fall on bent knee to make it happen. Get us a great trade deal (Carney)!" The Gordie Howe Bridge is a joint project between the Canadian and Michigan governments, fully financed by Canada. Once construction costs are recouped through tolls, the revenue will be shared with Michigan.
The bridge has encountered opposition from the Moroun family, owners of the Ambassador Bridge, who are reportedly attempting to hinder the new bridge's progress. Meanwhile, House Democrats in Washington are investigating whether the Moroun family has engaged in obstructive tactics regarding the Gordie Howe Bridge. A Canadian source familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity, indicated that the federal government has received indications that all necessary approvals for the bridgeβs opening are in place. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, which is responsible for the bridge's construction and management, has reportedly secured all technical approvals to move forward. As the situation develops, the focus remains on resolving the outstanding issues that have delayed the bridge's opening.
