In a significant development for urban infrastructure, the Ontario government has awarded a $198 million contract for the design and construction of a new parking facility at Ontario Place. The project, identified as RFP D/B β Design and Construct Ontario Place Parking Solution, is part of a larger initiative to enhance the area surrounding Lake Shore Boulevard West in Toronto. The contract has been granted to Pomerleau Inc., a prominent construction firm known for its expertise in large-scale projects.
The new parking structure is designed to accommodate up to 3,500 vehicles and will feature 680 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations alongside bicycle parking facilities. The design lead for this project is Arcadis Professional Services (Canada) Inc., which will ensure that the structure integrates well with the surrounding landscape. According to the project release, the five-storey garage will also include a designated bus pick-up and drop-off area, enhancing accessibility for visitors.
Strategically located at the existing parking lot site just south of Lake Shore Boulevard West, the new parking facility is expected to generate an estimated $60 million in gross revenue annually for the province once the broader Ontario Place redevelopment reaches full operational capacity. This revenue potential underscores the economic significance of the project within the context of Ontarioβs public infrastructure.
The decision to construct an above-ground parking structure comes after initial discussions about integrating parking beneath the new Ontario Science Centre. Premier Doug Ford and the City of Toronto subsequently considered relocating the parking to nearby Exhibition Place but ultimately opted for the current plan.
The redevelopment of Ontario Place is an extensive project that will include more than 50 acres of public trails, expanded green spaces, playgrounds, interactive water features, new beaches, event spaces, and a renovated marina, alongside the redesigned RBC Amphitheatre. The final designs for this ambitious project were revealed in June 2025.
Construction on the new science centre, which has a budget exceeding one billion dollars, is already underway with groundbreaking having occurred in May. The parking structure is expected to play a vital role in supporting the influx of visitors to Ontario Place as it transforms into a major recreational and cultural hub for residents and tourists alike.
With construction set to progress over the coming years, the Ontario government is making strides to enhance public amenities and promote sustainable transportation options in one of Toronto's most visited areas.
