Ksi Lisims LNG Project Secures Benefit Agreements with First Nations, Legal Challenges Withdrawn

The Ksi Lisims liquefied natural gas project has gained momentum as Western LNG announces benefit agreements with three First Nations, paving the way for the $10-billion project after legal challenges were withdrawn.

In Victoria, the lead developer of the Ksi Lisims liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, Western LNG based in Houston, has recently revealed that it has reached benefit agreements with three First Nations located in northern British Columbia. This development is significant as it has led to the Metlakatla First Nation and the Lax Kw’alaams Band withdrawing their legal challenge against the federal approval of the substantial $10-billion project. The third First Nation involved in these agreements is the Gitxaala Nation.
These benefit agreements encompass various aspects aimed at enhancing the economic development opportunities and climate initiatives for the communities that would be impacted by the project. The Ksi Lisims LNG project is a collaborative effort that also includes Rockies LNG, a consortium made up of Canadian natural gas producers, alongside the Nisga’a Nation, which is the host community where the project will be constructed.
Recently, Ksi Lisims has made strides in securing preliminary supply agreements with German utilities, indicating a positive trajectory toward the project's realization. The partners involved are now looking to make a definitive decision regarding the project's go-ahead within this year.
Eva Clayton, the president of the Nisga’a Nation, expressed optimism about the project’s economic significance for the entire northwest region of British Columbia, stating, "We have always envisioned the Ksi Lisims LNG project as economically important for the entirety of northwest B.C., and we are pleased to see this vision materializing."
As the project progresses, the collaboration with First Nations is expected to play a critical role in its advancement, particularly in addressing community concerns and fostering local economic benefits. The Ksi Lisims LNG project is positioned approximately 15 kilometers from the village of Gingolx in Nisga’a territory, and the impact of this development is anticipated to resonate throughout the region.
With the legal hurdles now cleared, the focus shifts to finalizing the project plans and ensuring that the agreements translate into tangible benefits for the involved communities. The timeline for the project's next steps will be crucial as stakeholders work towards final approvals and commencement of construction, which is poised to contribute significantly to the local and provincial economy.
