Major Road Resurfacing Projects Underway Across British Columbia

Numerous road resurfacing projects are set to enhance travel across northern British Columbia and the southern Interior, with significant investments aimed at improving highway conditions by fall 2026.

In British Columbia, travelers in the northern regions and southern Interior can expect smoother roadways as the 2026 construction season sees multiple resurfacing projects in progress. Significant upgrades are being made along Highway 97 and Highway 27, particularly between Azouzetta and Mount Solitude, situated two hours north of Prince George. A stretch of 40 kilometers of asphalt resurfacing is scheduled to occur between Honeymoon Creek Bridge and Big Boulder Creek Bridge. This project, known as Asphalt Surfacing 2026/27 Hwy 97 Azouzetta To Mount Solitude, has been awarded to Peter Bros. Construction, with a contract value of $10.5 million, and is anticipated to be completed by the fall of 2026.
Additionally, on Highway 27 and the Sowchea side roads, a seal coating will be applied over 75 kilometers from the junction of Highway 16 to the Stuart River Bridge, along with various side roads in the Sowchea area. LaPrairie Works Inc. has secured a $6 million contract for this work, which is also expected to finish by the fall.
Other notable resurfacing projects in northern British Columbia include improvements along Upper Halfway Road (53 km), Highway 97 from Bear Lake to Red Rocky Creek (17 km), and Highway 16 from Kasiks River Bridge to Andesite Boat Launch (20 km). Additional work will be carried out on Fort George area side roads (20 km), in the Peace district (25 km), and on Highway 113 between Big Cedar River Bridge and Sand-Gainor Creek Bridge (13 km).
The current construction season will see an estimated investment of approximately $45 million focused on resurfacing northern roads. In the southern Interior, around 500 kilometers of highways and side roads are also undergoing improvements. This summer, 28 kilometers of Highway 3 will be repaved from the east side of Kootenay Pass to the Summit Creek Bridge, alongside side roads in the Wynndel area. Okanagan Aggregates Ltd. has been awarded an $11.7 million contract for the project, expected to be completed by October.
In total, other significant projects in the southern Interior include the resurfacing of Highway 1 from Monte Creek to Hoffmanโ€™s Bluff (18.1 kilometers), Crazy Creek to Revelstoke (29.5 kilometers), and from Quartz to Glacier and various Golden Area side roads (31.5 kilometers). Additional resurfacing projects span Highway 1/97 from Venables Valley Road to the Highway 99 junction (27.1 kilometers), and Highway 3 from Elko to Fernie (10.2 kilometers).
Further work includes intermittent resurfacing on Highway 3 from Princeton to Stirling Bridge and along Princeton-Summerland Road (45.7 kilometers), and from Paulson Brake Check to Sheep Creek Chain Up and various Robson side roads (30.2 kilometers). The resurfacing projects also encompass the Snowshed Hill on Highway 5, Henning to Larson Hill, and Coldwater Road (50.6 kilometers), as well as CN Junction Road to Rayleigh and Inks Lake Hill northbound (27.3 kilometers). Highway 6 from Needles to Deep Creek (26.4 kilometers) and Highway 97 in the Lac la Hache area, including various side roads (61 kilometers), are also slated for improvements.
In total, over $136 million will be invested in the resurfacing of highways and local roads within the southern Interior this year, marking a significant commitment from the province to enhance transportation infrastructure.
