MHCA Receives Commemorative Keepsake from Portage and Main Intersection Project

The Manitoba Heavy Construction Association was presented with a unique keepsake from the Portage and Main intersection, crafted from iconic concrete barriers by MD Steele Construction.

WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Heavy Construction Association (MHCA) has recently been honored with a commemorative piece of concrete from the iconic barriers that once defined the Portage and Main intersection. This special keepsake was presented by MD Steele Construction, the company responsible for the significant reopening project at this historically important intersection. The MHCA shared in its newsletter that the company transformed one of the original concrete barriers into a distinctive memento, symbolizing the transformation of one of Canada’s most recognizable urban spaces. Each piece has been meticulously cut to reflect the shape of the City of Winnipeg, serving as a lasting tribute to a project that has reshaped the local landscape. The design of these keepsakes was created by local Anishinaabe artist Jordan Stranger, who incorporated one of four original designs that represent the four corners of the Portage and Main intersection. The MHCA expressed its gratitude for receiving the Two Rivers keepsake, which is inspired by the convergence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. This particular design illustrates the splash of a walleye, accompanied by sage falling to bless the land and the surrounding community. The presentation of this keepsake not only signifies the physical changes at Portage and Main but also celebrates its cultural and historical significance within Manitoba.
