Okanagan College is set to receive 256 new skilled-trades training seats as part of B.C.'s Look West strategy, aimed at addressing workforce needs in high-demand sectors.
KELOWNA, B.C. โ In a significant move to bolster the workforce in high-demand sectors, Okanagan College will add 256 new skilled-trades training seats. This initiative aligns with the Province of B.C.โs Look West strategy, which aims to deliver 5,000 new trades seats by the 2026-27 period. The introduction of these new training opportunities is expected to alleviate existing wait lists for in-demand apprenticeship programs, while also encouraging more young individuals to consider careers in trades. The sectors benefiting from this increase in training capacity include construction and housing, critical minerals, automotive, manufacturing, and clean energy. The demand for skilled labor is being driven by several major projects across clean energy, critical minerals, construction, and transportation throughout British Columbia. To further support this initiative, B.C. plans to establish two convening tables. These tables will bring together senior leaders from industry, post-secondary institutions, training partners, and organized labor to provide insights into the workforce's needs, identify capability gaps, and explore emerging opportunities within the sector.
Kelowna, recognized as B.C.โs third-largest aerospace hub, is home to about 18 percent of the provinceโs aerospace companies, highlighting its strategic importance in the region. The local workforce is in urgent need of skilled workers, including sheet-metal mechanics, welders, and electricians, all of whom are also sought after in the construction, maritime, and natural resource industries.
A noteworthy collaboration between Okanagan College and the BPL Legacy Foundation/KF Aerospace is underway, focusing on the construction of a new aerospace training facility. This facility is designed to enhance the aircraft maintenance-engineer program capacity, expanding the number of students from 64 to 144 annually by the year 2028.
According to the release, "With expanded programming at Okanagan College and a strong aircraft maintenance and manufacturing base, Kelowna is well-positioned to support B.C.โs priorities under the Canadian Defence Industrial Strategy." Local companies such as KF Aerospace, CAE, and TerraSense Analytics are actively involved in defense-related projects, which are creating job opportunities in aircraft maintenance, advanced manufacturing, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence.
