SUDBURY, ONT. — Recently, Workplace Safety North (WSN) and Ontario Mine Rescue (OMR) convened with partners, community leaders, and Indigenous representatives to honor the land designated for the future Ontario Mine Rescue Training Academy. This significant event marks the initial steps towards the development of a 124-acre facility that is set to commence site preparation and servicing later this year. The academy is designed to provide specialized training in various emergency response scenarios, including confined space rescue, live fire exercises, tower and water rescue. In a statement, Mike Parent, the president and CEO of WSN, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "The Ontario Mine Rescue Training Academy represents an important investment in the future of worker safety and emergency preparedness." He highlighted the need to recognize the land and its communities, acknowledging the long-term benefits this facility will bring to emergency response training in Ontario.
The academy is anticipated to open its doors in 2029, marking a pioneering development as it will be the first of its kind in Canada. This initiative is backed by a substantial investment of $125 million from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), complemented by the City of Greater Sudbury's contribution of land for the future facility.
WSIB president and CEO, Jeff Lang, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of honoring the land. He stated, "Honouring this ground means respecting the history of this place, being thoughtful stewards of the land, and ensuring that what we build here serves all our communities and future generations." Lang added that the Ontario Mine Rescue Training Academy will facilitate continuous training environments aimed at enhancing workplace safety while also contributing to the local economy, the Sudbury community, and the mining industry.
The establishment of this training academy is not only a step forward in emergency preparedness but also a vital investment in the broader community, enhancing the capacity for emergency response training across sectors beyond mining. As site preparation begins, the focus remains on the long-term vision for the facility and its impact on worker safety and emergency readiness in Ontario.
