Robert K. Irving, a key figure in the Irving family business empire, has died at 71 after battling cancer. His contributions to New Brunswick's economy and community are widely remembered.

FREDERICTON — Robert K. Irving, a prominent member of the Irving family business dynasty that is a cornerstone of New Brunswick's economy, has passed away at the age of 71 after a courageous fight against cancer. His family announced that he died on May 19 in Moncton, New Brunswick, surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Jill, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage, along with four children and four grandchildren.
In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed their gratitude for his leadership and commitment to the values that defined their business. "Mr. Irving passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife of 39 years, Jill, and their four children, Megan, Meredith, Olivia, and R.J.," they said. They described him as "the heart and soul" of the company, emphasizing how he built and guided it with passion and purpose.
Robert Irving was a descendant of James Dergavel Irving, who began the family's business legacy in the 1880s by purchasing a sawmill. Over the years, the Irvings expanded their operations into various sectors including oil refining, liquid gas, construction, and logistics, establishing themselves as a formidable economic force in New Brunswick. In 2010, the Irving business was divided into three distinct entities among the three sons of K.C. Irving. Robert, who was the second-oldest son of James K. Irving, served as co-CEO of J.D. Irving Ltd. alongside his elder brother, James “Jim” Irving, who remains as a survivor of Robert.
Robert's death has led to an outpouring of condolences from politicians at both the federal and provincial levels, many of whom remember him for his significant contributions to business and philanthropy. Premier Susan Holt acknowledged his efforts to champion New Brunswick as an investment destination and highlighted his support for community organizations and job creation. "Robert was a dedicated leader whose work helped shape our economy and communities, and his legacy will continue through his business and through the lives he impacted," she stated.
A spokesperson for the family noted that Robert had undergone successful cancer surgery in July 2025 and was receiving treatment, although the specific type of cancer was not disclosed. Born on December 3, 1954, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Robert graduated from Acadia University with a business degree and established J.D. Irving Ltd.'s operations in Moncton in 1977, where he lived until his passing.
The Irving family ranks among Canada's wealthiest, with Maclean’s magazine estimating their net worth at over $14 billion, placing them fourth on the list of the richest Canadians. Constantine Passaris, acting chair of the University of New Brunswick’s economics department, remarked on the Irving family’s companies, including Irving Oil, as vital anchors for the provincial economy. He noted Robert's leadership in the forestry sector, emphasizing that his company continues to employ youth and recent graduates despite the challenges faced by the industry.
In recognition of his extensive community involvement, Robert received the Order of New Brunswick in 2024 and has been inducted into several halls of fame, including the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame and the Canadian Agriculture Hall of Fame. P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz commended Irving for his influence on Prince Edward Island's economy, particularly through his work with Cavendish Farms.
Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald expressed his sorrow over Irving's passing, acknowledging his respected status in various industries, including paper products and agriculture. He highlighted Irving's dedication to his family and community, stating that he was a devoted husband and father.
A passionate hockey enthusiast, Robert Irving was the owner of the Moncton Wildcats, a team in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, which recently fell short of winning a second consecutive league title on May 17. QMJHL Commissioner Mario Cecchini expressed sadness at his passing, paying tribute to Irving as a “pillar and builder” within the league, known for his commitment to the players and the team.
Irving's philanthropic efforts have also left a lasting impact, with the Friends of Moncton Hospital Foundation noting his generous contributions to patient care and services. The foundation remarked that he believed deeply in giving back to the community that held great significance for him, with his support extending to numerous charitable initiatives.
Details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared by his family at a later date.
