The WSIB has modernized its First Aid Program to align with national standards and expand training options, impacting 76% of Ontario businesses.
In a significant move to enhance workplace safety across Ontario, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) has announced the launch of a modernized First Aid Program. This updated initiative aims to improve the quality and consistency of first aid training in the province, thereby ensuring safer work environments for employees. According to the WSIB’s release, this program impacts approximately 76 percent of businesses in Ontario, falling under the First Aid Regulation 1101. This regulation outlines essential guidelines regarding the number of first aiders required on job sites, as well as stipulations for first aid kits and stations. One of the key enhancements to the First Aid Program is the alignment of training protocols with national standards established by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z1210:24. This standard pertains to first aid training for workplaces, emphasizing curriculum and quality management for training agencies. The WSIB has taken steps to not only modernize its training but also to broaden the network of approved training providers throughout Ontario, increasing the number from previous levels to a total of 65.
Moreover, the WSIB is introducing First Aid Program badges, which will serve to verify the status of approved training providers and their affiliates. This measure is designed to facilitate easier identification and access to WSIB-approved providers, ensuring that businesses can readily obtain the essential training needed for workplace safety. Carrie Briley, the director of health and safety program design at WSIB, commented on the improvements, stating, "By bringing our program up to national standards and expanding our network of approved providers, we’re breaking down barriers for businesses."
The WSIB will continue to accept first aid certificates from any training provider across Canada, as long as they meet the CSA Z1210 standard. Additionally, all first aid certificates issued by WSIB-approved providers prior to June 21 will remain valid until their respective expiry dates. This initiative reflects the WSIB's commitment to enhancing health and safety standards within Ontario’s workplaces and ensuring that employees receive adequate training in first aid and emergency response.
The launch of this modernized program is expected to have a positive impact on workplace safety culture across various sectors and industries in Ontario, ultimately contributing to a safer work environment for all employees. As businesses adapt to these updated guidelines and training resources, the WSIB aims to foster a proactive approach to health and safety in the workplace.
